Noun »Shadow« as a Part of Similes: A Classification of Examples in the Works of Ivan Cankar and Ivo Andrić

This research project reviewed examples of the use of the noun “shadow” as a part of a simile in “as” constructions (linked by kao/kakor) in prose works by Ivan Cankar and Ivo Andrić. Seventy-one such examples were found in Cankar’s works and twenty-seven in Andrić’s. Two mean of classifying the examples were used. In the first one, examples were divided into four classes according to the shadow characteristics on which the comparison is based. In the second one, examples were collected in which the writers had placed an adjective, pronoun, or numeral next to the noun “shadow”, thus adjusting the simile. These means of classification showed similarities of the use of shadow as a part of simile in these two authors’ prose works.
