Slovenian Verbal Noun: Meaning, Argument Structure, and Countability
Keywords:
Slovenian, verbal noun, argument structure, deverbal nominalization, countabilityAbstract
The paper deals with the Slovenian verbal noun as regards the argument structure inherited from the underlying verb and its countability properties. Numerous studies, including those by Bajec (1950), Toporišič (2000), Žele (1993, 2001), and Vidovič Muha (2011), argue for the existence of a process-event verbal noun (word formation with the meaning of an action, event, or state), which is uncountable, and an object-result verbal noun, which can be countable (most often carrying the meaning of result, consequence, product, object, or effect of an event). This article proposes an additional category, a [+count] process-event verbal noun in Slovenian.
