A Quantitative and Qualitative Corpus Analysis of First-Person Singular and Plural Forms

Abstract

The article presents a multi-layered description of the use of self-references in theses at different university levels and in different disciplines in Slovenia, as analysed in the KAS corpus of academic Slovene. Quantitative analysis of verbal forms shows that in academic Slovene, by far the most prevalent form of self-references is plural present, that the use of singular forms for self-referencing declines from the lowest to the highest university level, and that in the Slovene academic environment highly distinct self-referencing conventions have become established that follow the hard and soft discipline divide. Quantitative analysis has identified the most frequent discursive roles, which show a preference for certain forms and discursive functions of self-references.
