Proverbs are considered cultural heritage, ancestors’ wisdom, aesthetically more beautiful language and pieces of language containing the experiences and images of a nation. As such, they have often been presented in various volumes, collections, or in other forms in Slovenia since the end of the 18th century, when that which was “folk” gained value and, in line with Romanticism, became sought-after material by linguists and folklorists. The Institute of Slovenian Ethnography ZRC SAZU has in its archives a collection of Slovenian proverbs based on the collection and work of several folklorists and enthusiasts. The article gives an overview of the origin and development of this collection, based on the sources listed in the collection.
