Abstract

The article examines the evolving role of artificial intelligence in the field of literary translation. It begins by discussing the binary nature of literary translation, which combines the characteristics of both reproductive and creative arts, and explains why this framework is the most appropriate for comparing human and machine artistic creations. In this context, the article then analyses the translation of Ivan Bunin’s short story Antonovka Apples, produced by the large language model GPT, focusing on register and cultural-historical awareness. It assesses GPT’s knowledge of orthography and the challenges it faces with poetry. Slovenian and English translations are compared, raising the question of the importance of data for artificial intelligence. The article provides an overview of the architecture and a glimpse into the future of large language models, whereby it demystifies artificial intelligence and enables a deeper understanding of its capabilities and shortcomings in the context of literary translation and beyond.
