The First Slovene Advertisement of 1794 and its Author, Valentin Vodnik (1758--1819)

Abstract

The article analyzes a German-Slovene text of 1794, otherwise known as a document from the history of the Slovene book trade. It is an advertisment which in a form of a flyer advertised the publication of the first issue of Vodnik's almanac Velika pratika. The author of the Slovene translation (it can be assumed that the author of the German text was Korn, whose name is signed under the text) has not been identified. The article attempts to prove that the author of this text is Valentin Vodnik, which would also make him the author of the first Slovene advertisment, published prior to the apperance of the first newspaper advertisment in Ljubljanske novice in 1797.
