Abstract

The study sketches the controversial attitude of A. I. Solzhenitsyn towards A. P. Chekhov and his work, as expressed in two Solzhenitsyn's essays of 1998. It focusses particularly on issue that demonstrate the differende between types of Russian writers-between a writer who demands from an author, as a bearer of high values, to be a prophet and people's and nation's teacher (A. I. Solzhenitsyn), and writer who does not have a need for this "sublimity" and releases literature from the requirement of having some particular social, moral, or religious justification for its exsistence (A. P. Chekhov).
