Abstract

From the two late 18th century Slovene translations of the New Testament (by Štefan Küzmič, 1771, and Jurij Japelj, 1784) it is evident that Jurij Japelj et al. were not aware of the Prekmurje literary tradition. Küzmič and Japelj used two different syntactic systems. Štefan Küzmič frequently used present active participles ending in -č and past active participles ending in -ši (the latter, expressing anteriority, is unusual for the Central Slovene standard). Jurij Japelj, however, used the present active participles in -č, to express simultaneity; in order to express anteriority heresorted to coordinate, subordinate and infinitival constructions.
