The Diary as a Source for Literary History: Louise Crobath's 1844 Tagebuch

In the paper we are interested in the diary as a type of documentary material and the function of this material for the purpose of literary research. First, we introduce the diary as part of the group of similar sources, among which are letters, memoirs, polemic writings, essays, notes, evaluations, notebooks, authors’ documentary material, etc. Then we speak about the usage of archival material in (Slovenian) literary historiography from the viewpoint of different methods. We look at the diary through the conception of ego documents of Winfried Schulze as it forms mostly under the influence of i.e. cultural turn, which also encourages the inclusion of literary science in the area of cultural studies. With the help of an example of an intimate diary, we offer a draft of a typology of functions for using the diaries in research. Alongside that we present fresh transcripts and previously unpublished Slovenian translations of fragments from the author’s German diary.
