The paper discusses the fundamental theoretical principles and the approach used in establishing typology of dictionary explanations of class adjectives in Slovar slovenskega knjižnega jezika (Dictionary of the Slovene standard language, eSSKJ) in relation to SSKJ, other previous explanatory dictionaries, and modern explanatory dictionaries of West Slavic languages. The main conclusion is that the eSSKJ, with its new concept, was able to take into account and partially transfer into practice certain theories which have appeared since the completion of the SSKJ, as well as experience from previous and related modern dictionaries. It is also important to emphasize that classifying meaning is always tied to the lexical level, which also enables a precise analysis of the transition from non-classifying to classifying meanings and vice versa.
