Abstract

The article is a chronological and topical survey of the most relevant foreign literature on valency theory that directly or indirectly influenced the development of Slovene valency theory. At the same time, the overlap between various valency theories with mutually complementary features affirms and allows the generalized valency treatment of the sentence semantic base, thus the generalized semantic-syntactic valency, which in the basis of specific structural-syntactic valencies of individual languages. The relationships between the semantic-syntactic and structuarl-syntactic valencies of individual languages point out the semantic intention of verbs/adjectives in the predicate, participants in various participant roles, and their possible formal realizations in structural-syntactic valency.
